Capileira

13- Capiliera from Bubion villgae

Capileira is a lovely place to visit, full of traditional flat roofed white houses and narrow streets and it is the centre for most walking and hiking in the area.  It is where the forest track comes down from Trevelez. This track between Capileira and Trevelez branches to the left and this was the old route to the peaks of Mulhacen and Granada until it was closed only a few years ago.

3-Enjoying an afternoon stroll in Capiliera

At 1435 metres above sea level it is the second highest village in Spain and has this fantastic location with the often snow topped mountains above (Mulhacen at a height of 3481 metres) and beautiful views across the valley and to the villages (Bubion and Pampaneira) below.  Whilst it caters for the many tourists who visit, both Spanish and foreign, it also manages to maintain its own strong traditional identity and charm.

There is a well organised tourist office in the village (on the left as you drive in coming from the cortijos) that organises minibuses with special permission to go up towards the peaks of Mulhacen. They offer a variety of free maps, services and information on walking and are well worth a visit.  They can also organise National Parks Minibuses to the restricted areas.

There is also a wide range of restaurants, bars and shops in this village and we recommend you spend a few hours wandering around just discovering places and enjoying any of the many bars or restaurants, some of which also have beautiful gardens.
