Drive to Trevelez and just before you get to the village turn left towards Alta Trevelez. Drive for some 100 yards till you see a dirt track on the left, sign posted Camino Forestal. Keep driving and this will take you above our cortijos for approximately half an hour. When you get to the T junction if you turn left it will take you to Portugos. Alternatively if you turn right it will take you towards the waterfalls known as Tajos Cortes. There is a turning to the left just before the waterfalls where you can park your car and walk down to the waterfalls. After the waterfalls you can continue driving until you reach the tarmac. Here you can turn left towards Capileira where you can return to the cortijos on the tarmac road. Alternatively if you turn right the road will take you up for several kms towards Mulhacen peaks and then you will be stopped by the gates as you cannot drive any further and only walking or cycling allowed.
There are regional maps in the cortijos. Do please use them.
This is another lovely drive and well worth a visit – for more information see O Sel Ling Buddhist Centre.
The area is famous for horse riding and pony trekking. There are various people who do excursions. Our next door neighbour has 15 horses. Please see more information on the link page or go to their website: caminoverde.com
Normally trout fishing is allowed with a license obtainable in Trevelez. However, over the last 4 years the water level has been very low so check with the tourist office in the main square in Trevelez.
The Sierra Nevada ski resort is the most southerly ski resort in Europe and consequently has a lot of sunshine. Sierra Nevada literally means “Snowy Mountain Range” and includes some of the highest peaks in Europe with Mulhacen the highest at 3,482m. It has the best snow and the longest season in the whole of Spain with normally 5 months of snow from December to the end of April. The resort has 61km of ski slopes and is open from 9am to 5 pm daily. However, if you are thinking of going you should always check snow levels first. (You can check this on our link page). You can hire all the equipment there. It takes an hour and a half to get there from the cortijos and you take the same turn off as the Alhambra, signposted clearly for Sierra Nevada. This turn off from the motorway is just before Granada.
